The 5G spectrum auctions have begun, and the top telecom players are competing against each other for the 5G throne. Let’s get some details about what’s going on.
What’s Happening?
Years back, we started with 2G and 3G internet, which used to lag, and downloading used to feel like years! Then Reliance Jio came into existence like shining armour and introduced us to the world of new opportunities with 4G internet.
Now, even 4G will soon lose its charm because we will be surfing the internet with 5G lightning speed. Yes! To make 5G possible, India’s biggest spectrum auction has finally started!
The opportunity is so huge that giant telecom players have placed their bids. These players are Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone-Idea, and the surprise entrant – Gautam Adani’s flagship Adani Enterprises.
But, What’s a Spectrum, and Why Is This Auction Held?
So, a spectrum is the radio frequency that sends wireless signals. We are already using it, and so we can make phone calls and transmit data. This recent auction is for the 5G spectrum.
The government has come up with this spectrum auction to allocate various frequencies to the private sector. After winning the bid, these companies will have the right to use the radio frequency and roll out 5G internet connectivity services.
The government has 72 GHz (gigahertz) of 5G airwaves worth Rs 4.3 lakh crore on offer, which will be valid for 20 years.
Why is 5G a Game Changer?
The first element is the lightning speed! We all have been using 4G, which currently offers a speed of 21 Mbps (megabits per second). But with 5G, you can download up to 10 GB (gigabyte) per second, which means you can download a movie in full HD in just a few seconds! That’s Wow!
5G can support over 1,000 more devices per meter than what is supported by 4G.
5G speed will boost the metaverse and other augmented reality applications.
How Is The 5G Game of Thrones Going On?
Reliance Jio has made the highest EMD. What is EMD? Well, it is the amount given as earnest money. This amount is the mandatory sum required to confirm a contract. It also indicates the amount of spectrum a company is eyeing to buy.

What’s Lies Ahead?
The result of the auction is yet to arrive. But the spectrum allocation is expected to be done by August 2022.
So, if you are planning to buy a new phone, wait, get it after the 5G network is live!
That’s it for today. We will see you guys again with another interesting topic.
