The arrival of the monsoon in India significantly impacts the country’s agriculture and economy. According to the recent forecast by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall in July is likely to be above average. Given the direct relationship between agriculture and the weather, this news is crucial not only for farmers but also for the economy.

In this article, we will discuss the monsoon’s impact on the agricultural sector and the broader economy, opportunities for investors, and future prospects.

What’s Happening?

June was somewhat disappointing in terms of monsoon rainfall, as the country experienced 11% less rainfall than average, the highest shortfall in the past five years. However, the IMD forecasts an 80% chance of above-average rainfall across the country in July. The main monsoon region, crucial for agriculture, is also expected to receive above-average rainfall. This raises hopes that good rainfall in July will compensate for the June shortfall, which we have already started seeing in the first week of July.

Forecast of Increased Rainfall and Farmer Optimism

Despite the lower rainfall in June, the sowing of Kharif crops this year has set a record. As of June 30, rainfall across the country was 11% less, but by July 8, it had increased by 2%. This change has impacted the sowing of Kharif crops.

According to the data released by the Ministry of Agriculture on July 8, 2024, the sowing of Kharif crops as of July 5, 2024, has increased by 14% compared to last year, with a total of 378 lakh hectares sown, which is 47 lakh hectares more than last year.

Moreover, the sowing of pulses and oilseeds has increased by 50%, while the cultivation of rice, which requires more water, has increased by only 19%. These figures indicate that farmers are enthusiastic about cultivation despite the lower rainfall.

What’s in it for Investors?

India is not only an agrarian country but also a major player in the global agricultural sector. Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for about 55% of the Indian population. According to estimates by Inc42, the Indian agricultural sector is expected to grow to USD 24 billion by 2025.

Additionally, the Indian food and grocery market is the sixth-largest in the world, with retail sales contributing 70%. These figures highlight India’s agricultural potential and future investment opportunities.

What’s Next?

The monsoon impacts not only Kharif crops such as rice, pulses, and oilseeds but also ensures adequate soil moisture for the sowing of Rabi crops such as wheat, barley, chickpea, lentil, peas, and mustard. Nearly half of the country’s farmlands depend on the monsoon.

If July indeed witnesses good rainfall, it will not only result in a good Kharif harvest but also prepare the soil for Rabi sowing. Additionally, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, the area under cultivation for key vegetables like onions, tomatoes, and potatoes has significantly increased this Kharif season compared to last year. This good rainfall could help control food prices and boost exports.
