India Hits 300 GW Non-Fossil Capacity: What Does It Mean?

India has crossed the 300 GW mark in non-fossil fuel power generation capacity as of July 31. That’s over 60 percent of the 2030 target of 500 GW already done. Total installed capacity stands at roughly 552 GW, and non-fossil sources now account for more than 54 percent of it.

So what’s behind this milestone and could it open up a serious investment window for renewable energy investors? Let’s break it down.

What’s Happening?

As per the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, India’s non-fossil capacity reached 300.50 GW by July 31. Solar is the biggest chunk of that at 164.59 GW. Wind follows with 58.14 GW, and hydro comes next at 57.24 GW. The rest of the mix includes 11.75 GW of bio-power and 8.78 GW of nuclear.

Solar’s rise has been remarkable, just 2.8 GW in 2014, now sitting at around 165 GW. Wind has climbed from 21 GW to 58.14 GW over the same stretch. In 2025-26, the government added a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil capacity, with solar contributing 44.6 GW and wind another 6 GW.

Q2 2026: Rajasthan, UP and Gujarat Take the Lead

India added close to 16.12 GW of renewable energy capacity between April and June 2026. That’s a 67.8 percent jump year-on-year. IEEFA data shows Gujarat topping the charts with 4.43 GW of additions. Rajasthan came next at 2.51 GW, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 1.69 GW. Combined, these three states made up more than 53 percent of all fresh capacity.

UP posted the biggest Q-o-Q jump in Q2 2026, with installations rising 1.32 GW over Q1 levels. Madhya Pradesh was the only other major state where additions ticked up by 38.4 MW. Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu, meanwhile, saw declines from Q1 2026. Solar accounted for 73.8 percent of total net additions. Large hydro was the single source where net capacity actually grew, up about 30 percent.

Wind additions have held steady at around 1.48 GW per quarter since Q2 2025. Coal additions, in contrast, fell 4.8 percent on a quarter-on-quarter basis. Gujarat and Maharashtra added the most wind capacity, giving the renewable pipeline even more heft.

H1 2026 and the Power Demand Surge

H1 2026 saw India add 35.13 GW of new power capacity that’s 54 percent more than the 22.82 GW added in H1 2025. Renewables made up 87.1 percent of the total, or 30.58 GW. Solar alone contributed 26.34 GW, roughly three-quarters of everything installed during the period.

Demand is running hot too. July power consumption rose 10.93 percent year-on-year to 170.70 billion units, up from 153.88 BU in July 2025. Peak demand hit 270.20 GW just shy of the all-time record of 270.82 GW set in May.

What Does This Mean for Investors?

Going from 300.50 GW to the 500 GW target means India has to add roughly 199.5 GW more by 2030. So capex intensity across solar, wind, storage and transmission is likely to stay high for years to come. Solar manufacturing is ramping up to domestic capacity for solar PV modules on the ALMM list has crossed 200 GW, up from just 2.3 GW in 2014. The PLI scheme has clearly done its part.

Renewable generation has surged from 190.96 BU in 2014-15 to 477.79 BU in 2025-26. Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, work is on to turn India into a hub for green hydrogen production, use and exports. IEEFA, however, warns that the power sector transition needs a solid policy and planning framework to keep the system reliable and financially viable.

What’s Next?

According to the Power Ministry, India’s installed capacity could reach 874 GW by 2031-32. In a Rajya Sabha reply, Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik said the government is focusing on thermal, hydro, nuclear and renewable sources, along with energy storage and transmission infrastructure. Total capacity stood at 5,48,858 MW as of June 30, 2026 non-fossil sources made up 54.18 percent of that, and renewables including hydro accounted for 52.58 percent.

Coal is still the single biggest source at 2,24,158 MW. Solar sits at 1,62,152 MW. Between April 2023 and June 2026, 21,080 MW of thermal capacity has been commissioned, 47,545 MW is under construction, and contracts for 16,000 MW have been awarded. India’s thermal capacity need by 2035-36 is estimated at around 3,15,000 MW.

The storage push is hard to miss. Around 1,47,720 MW of renewable capacity is under construction 1,19,580 MW solar, 27,720 MW wind. On top of that, 15,870 MW/95,220 MWh of pumped storage projects and 15,754 MW/42,530 MWh of battery energy storage systems are being built. For transmission, the plan is to add roughly 1,91,474 ckm of lines and 1,274 GVA of transformation capacity between 2022-23 and 2031-32.
