As we celebrate World Tourism Day on September 27, 2024, India’s tourism sector is rapidly growing and playing a significant role on the global stage. Economic growth, an expanding middle class, and favourable government policies have contributed to the rapid development of this sector.
From an investor’s perspective, India’s tourism sector is not only keeping pace with current trends but also promises even broader opportunities in the future. In this article, we will discuss the current status of India’s tourism sector, the key drivers of growth, and potential investment opportunities.
Current Landscape of the Tourism Sector
Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, has announced that India is set to be among the top 10 tourist destinations in the world within the next five years. He indicated that the rapidly growing tourism sector’s contribution to the Indian economy is expected to rise from the current 7.9% to over 10%. Furthermore, India has climbed to the 39th position in the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Development Index 2024.
Additionally, on July 23, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman allocated ₹2,479.62 crore for capital expenditure in the tourism sector for FY24-25, representing an increase of 3.3% compared to FY2023-24.
In her budget speech, the finance minister also proposed the development of the Vishnupad Temple and Mahabodhi Temple corridors, building on the success of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor. These initiatives aim to transform these religious sites into world-class pilgrimage and tourism centers.
The Role of Foreign Tourists in India
According to the Monthly Tourism Statistics report for June 2024, India’s tourism industry has experienced rapid growth in recent years. In June 2024, India attracted 706,045 foreign tourists, a 9.0% increase compared to 648,008 foreign tourists in June 2023. Furthermore, in the first six months of 2024, 4,778,374 foreign tourists visited various destinations, representing a 13.5% increase compared to the same period last year. These figures indicate that India’s tourism sector is rejuvenating and expanding swiftly.

According to the data, Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEEs) from foreign tourists reached ₹1,27,628 crore in the first six months of 2024, reflecting an 8% increase compared to 2023.
Growing Popularity of Rural Tourism
Rural tourism is also gaining popularity in India and is poised to become a significant segment of tourism in the coming years. Under rural tourism, visitors experience the culture, traditions, and natural beauty of Indian villages. Notable rural tourism destinations include Pushkar in Rajasthan, Kumarakom in Kerala, Mawlynnong in Meghalaya, Kutch in Gujarat, and Ranikhet in Uttarakhand.
In addition, Yuksom in Sikkim, Santiniketan in West Bengal, and Wai in Maharashtra are also major rural tourism destinations. Various initiatives have been launched by the government and local communities to promote this sector, enhancing the facilities available to tourists.

The Future of the Indian Tourism Sector
India’s tourism sector is rapidly growing, as evidenced by its contribution to the GDP, which was $178 billion in 2019 and is projected to reach $512 billion by 2028.
India’s travel market is estimated to grow from $75 billion in FY20 to $125 billion by FY27. Moreover, the Indian airline travel market is expected to double by FY27, owing to improvements in airport infrastructure and access to passports.
Furthermore, the hospitality industry in Indian tourism is projected to generate revenue exceeding $59 billion by 2028.
