India’s investment landscape is undergoing a major transformation. Indian investors no longer want to limit themselves to the domestic stock market; they now want to invest directly in some of the world’s largest companies and emerging technologies. In this context, the new facility for international investing through GIFT City marks an important step forward. It will make it easier for investors to access global opportunities and create new avenues for portfolio diversification.

What’s Happening?

India’s four major brokerage firms — Zerodha, Groww, Angel One, and Upstox — have received approval from the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) to offer investments in international and US stocks through GIFT City.

This approval comes at a time when investor interest in companies related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies is rising rapidly. There is also growing anticipation that several major global technology companies may enter public markets in the coming years, creating additional opportunities for international investing.

Under the new arrangement, Groww and Angel One will operate as Global Access Providers (GAP), while Zerodha and Upstox will offer services under the broker-dealer model. These platforms may take two to three months to launch their services, as they need to complete technology integration, testing, and regulatory compliance processes. Meanwhile, Dhan-backed Raise Securities has already started offering investments in US stocks.

Why Are GIFT City and the GAP Framework Important?

GIFT City, located in Gujarat, is India’s International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), developed to promote global financial services and cross-border transactions. The Global Access Provider (GAP) framework introduced by IFSCA allows Indian investors to invest in foreign shares and other international securities through a regulated and cost-efficient structure. One of its key features is that no additional withdrawal charges are levied when bringing money back to India.

Under this arrangement, Groww and Angel One will function as Global Access Providers (GAP), while Zerodha and Upstox will offer services through foreign partners such as ViewTrade International and Interactive Brokers under the broker-dealer model. This is expected to make access to global markets easier and safer for Indian investors.

Why Is the Demand for International Investment Increasing?

Over the past few years, there has been a significant shift in the mindset of Indian investors. Investors no longer want to remain limited to sectors such as banking, IT, or domestic consumer businesses. Instead, they are seeking opportunities in sectors such as AI, semiconductors, electric vehicles, cloud computing, and space technology.

Many of these sectors have limited representation in the Indian market, whereas markets such as the US, Taiwan, and South Korea are home to some of the world’s leading companies in these industries. As a result, investors are increasingly viewing global exposure as an important component of their investment portfolios.

The weakening of the rupee, strong returns from US technology-focused indices over the past year, and expectations of several high-profile public offerings have also boosted interest in international investing. While a few platforms already offered overseas investment options, the entry of major brokerage firms could make these services far more accessible.

What Does This Mean for Investors?

The biggest advantage of this initiative is portfolio diversification. Investors will now have the opportunity to spread their investments across different countries and sectors instead of concentrating solely on the Indian market, helping them manage risk more effectively.

Additionally, investors will gain direct access to some of the world’s leading technology, AI, and innovation-driven companies. The GAP framework is also expected to make the investment process simpler, more transparent, and better regulated, which could boost investor confidence.

This arrangement may also benefit NRI investors, as it will provide them with more options to invest across both Indian and global markets.

However, investors should also be aware that international investing comes with its own set of risks, including currency fluctuations, global economic uncertainties, and volatility in overseas markets. Therefore, instead of investing solely based on opportunities, it is important to conduct thorough research and maintain a balanced investment strategy.

What’s Next?

Interest in international investing among Indian investors could increase further in the coming years. The weakening rupee, a strong global IPO pipeline, and robust returns from technology-focused markets have made overseas markets increasingly attractive.

Recently, Elon Musk’s SpaceX raised $7.5 billion at a valuation of approximately $1.75 trillion, making it one of the most valuable private companies in the world. Meanwhile, AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic are also expected to pursue public listings in the future. In such a scenario, investor interest in global opportunities linked to AI and emerging technologies could continue to rise, further expanding the scope of international investing.
