Understand how this landmark inclusion enhances India’s financial stature.

Indian government bonds have been included in the renowned JP Morgan Emerging Markets Bond Index. This is a significant achievement for the Indian financial market. It indicates the rapid growth of India’s economy and assures foreign investors of the strength and reliability of India’s debt market.

Let’s discuss what this inclusion means and how it will impact India’s economy.

What’s Happening?

On June 28, 2024, government bonds officially became part of the JP Morgan Emerging Market Bond Index, marking a significant moment in the history of India’s debt market. The inclusion was announced in September 2023, but the effects were felt immediately. Over the past nine months, since September 2023, foreign investors have invested approximately $10 billion in the Indian bond market.

The inclusion of Indian bonds in the JP Morgan Emerging Market Bond Index will be implemented gradually over a 10-month period. Starting in June 2024 with a 1% weight, it will increase by 1 percentage point each month, reaching a maximum of 10% by March 31, 2025.

Impact on Corporate Bonds and the Rupee

As mentioned in The Financial Express, Nikhil Aggarwal, founder and CEO of Grip Invest, says that the inclusion of government bonds will particularly reduce the interest rates on AAA-rated corporate bonds. Consequently, companies will be able to borrow at lower interest rates, making it easier for them to expand their businesses and boost the economy.

According to data from the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL), foreign investors have invested a total of $9 billion in the Indian debt market so far this year, while there has been a trend of capital outflow from the equity market. Nikhil Aggarwal believes that this trend among foreign investors is partly due to the inclusion in the JP Morgan Bond Index. He also says, “This investment will play a crucial role in strengthening the Indian rupee”.

What’s in it for Investors?

The JP Morgan Emerging Market Bond Index manages $213 billion in assets. It is estimated that giving Indian bonds a 10% weight in this index could bring in $21 billion (approximately Rs 1.7 trillion) into the Indian market by March 2025, assuming investors initially had zero weightage for Indian sovereign bonds. Continuous inflows are expected to keep the prices of Indian bonds strong.

Furthermore, following the inclusion in the JP Morgan Index, other global indices like Bloomberg and FTSE may also consider including Indian bonds in their portfolios. This could lead to even more foreign investment in India.

What’s Next?

According to The Financial Express, experts say that in the medium to long term, the Indian economy will benefit from lower borrowing costs. Government bond yields could decrease by 15-20 basis points, allowing the government to raise funds on cheaper terms. This will help the government maintain or increase its spending on important infrastructure projects and development, taking the country’s growth to new heights.
