Artificial Intelligence is evolving swiftly, and India is gearing up to establish itself as a global leader through the ambitious ‘India AI’ program.

What’s Happening?

On October 13, the first edition of the IndiaAI report was submitted by seven working groups associated with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). IndiaAI adopts a mission-centric approach, ensuring a focused and unified strategy to address gaps in the current AI ecosystem. This includes areas such as compute infrastructure, data management, AI financing, research and innovation, targeted skilling, and institutional capacity for data, all aimed at maximising the potential of AI to contribute to India’s advancement.

As per Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, the government plans to achieve a $1 trillion digital economy for India by 2026, with ‘India AI’ playing a crucial role.

Recommendations from Experts

The experts provided a comprehensive overview of the operational aspects of setting up Centers of Excellence (CoEs) and the institutional framework governing the collection, management, processing, and storage of data by the National Data Management Office (NDMO).

The report includes suggestions on how India can capitalise on its demographic advantage and harness its status as an IT powerhouse to enhance the proliferation of AI skills within the country. It emphasises the need to fortify the AI computing infrastructure in India, promoting AI innovation through collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors, such as public-private partnerships (PPPs).

The report proposes recommendations for the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme to support financial incentives and infrastructure design for domestic companies, startups, and MSMEs.

What’s Next?

According to Dainik Bhaskar, if everything aligns with this plan, India is projected to add Rs 40 lakh crores to its GDP within two years through the aid of AI.
