The Indian gaming industry has faced several challenges in the past that have, in some ways, hindered growth. These include the blocking of betting/gambling sites, the imposition of 28% GST on online gaming involving money, and, most recently, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025. But will these collectively bring the industry to an end, or will this new government bill give it a fresh direction? With India’s young population, affordable internet, and record number of gamers, could the industry soon reach a new peak?
Let’s look at India’s gaming industry from a different perspective and understand its growth in this visual guide.

What’s Next?
India has become the second-largest market in the world by mobile game downloads, over three times bigger than the US and Brazil. Yet, it contributes less than 2% to the global gaming market, while the US and China each hold about 25%. This highlights India’s significant untapped potential.
At the same time, the industry faces headwinds after the GST on online gaming introduced in October 2023. Illegal operators continue to disrupt the system, making it harder for legitimate companies to compete.
Despite this, global players remain optimistic. Krafton, the South Korea-based maker of PUBG and BGMI, believes India’s e-gaming market is set for strong growth in the coming years. With its large gamer base, affordable internet, rising female participation, and young population, India’s gaming industry may be poised for a strong boost in the future.
